Consider the surface you will be tie dying on. For easier cleanup, I suggest covering your area with a plastic table cloth. I also use wire racks instead of sheet pans to allow excess dye to drain out of the garment rather than merging all of the colors together. High-quality products will assist to assure success. High-quality fiber reactive dyes (dye powder) and cotton shirts will generate vibrant colors throughout the dyeing process and will hold their color after washing and wearing. Fiber reactive powder colors from Dharma Trading Co. or Procion dyes from Amazon are my personal favorites. They provide consistent and stunning color effects.
To begin, lay the garment flat. Scrunch tiny strips of cloth together at random. Continue scrunching and folding the cloth until it forms a somewhat flat, compact disk. Wrap the disk in many rubber bands. The more tightly you scrunch it, the more white patches will appear in the finished shirt.
