Some groups in the genre perform songs about drug trafficking, while Gomez and Pea are more renowned for their love ballads. Pea (28) was the leader of the group Zayda y Los Culpables (Zayda and the Guilty Ones). She was shot at a Matamoros hotel with two people, a friend and the hotel manager, on Friday night. The others perished on the spot.
Ortega was a "grupero" musician who was slain on October 19 in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. Gruperos often sing "narcocorridos," or songs about drug trafficking and drug traffickers. Ortega's corpse, along with two others, was discovered on a roadway riddled with gunshot holes. Drug-related violence is suspected, however this has yet to be proven. According to Carlos Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the local prosecutor's office, the victims had several gunshot wounds and seemed to have been slain by many guys, based on the amount of empty shell casings.
Prosecutors are looking into whether Mr. Gmez, who was most renowned for his impassioned love ballads, had links to organized crime. However, the inquiry into his kidnapping has been a tangle of competing testimonies, missing witnesses, and loose ends that are unlikely to be resolved anytime soon. Investigators have still to question the two impresarios who were with Mr. Gmez when he was abducted, as well as the other members of his entourage. We aim to find all of these persons, said Mara Elena Cornejo Chvez, Michoacn State's associate attorney general. It's difficult for us since they've all left the state.
