Funny Scary Face Anime

Tim Sutton, the director/writer, returns to form after a commercial turn with Donnybrook (2018). Sutton, like Dark Night (2016), creates characters who never seem to escape their bubble. This decision results in a viewing experience that relies heavily on concept and, as a result, may not appeal to everyone. The film depicts modern-day New York City as a place so enamored with wealth that inequity can only be addressed through violence. Because of its bleak tone, Funny Face, like the billion-dollar box office hit Joker (2019), comes across as one-note. Sutton, on the other hand, is a talented filmmaker, and Funny Face contains some of his best work to date. There is a scene in the film where the protagonist wakes up in a dream, only to erupt in rage and begin slapping himself until he awakens. It's a very funny moment, in my opinion, and thus quite refreshing. Moments like these serve as a reminder that Sutton may not take himself as seriously as his slow-burning sequences suggest. Whatever comes next for him, I hope he makes room for the lighter fare of his earlier films, such as Memphis (2014) and Pavilion (2012).

8 My name is Sakamoto (Sakamoto Desu-Ka)

Now consider the same fish-out-of-water premise, but from the perspective of the other fish; imagine having to share your life with someone who is always perfect and cool, no matter what they do. Even when they're going upstairs, eating rice, or batting a bee out the window, while the majority of what you do is undoubtedly mundane and humanly flawed. Isn't it frustrating? That's what Sakamoto-classmates Kun's have to deal with every day when he performs the most mundane and impossible tasks flawlessly. The character design is fantastic, the punchlines are incredibly surprising, and each and every episode is a winner, just like Sakamoto and his ambiguous ending.
